If your solar panel appears to charge your camera slowly, or the battery level drops even when the charging icon is visible, this may be expected in certain situations.
Solar panels are designed to maintain the battery level during normal use, not to fully recharge a drained battery.
This article explains how solar charging works, what may affect charging speed, and how to optimize performance.
About Solar Charging
Solar panels for security cameras provide a trickle charge—a slow, steady flow of power to offset typical daily usage. This works best when sunlight is consistent and the camera is not under heavy use.
Important: Solar panels are not meant to replace wall charging when the battery is low or power usage is high.
Common Reasons for Slow Solar Charging
Charging may appear slow or insufficient due to:
- Limited sunlight: Cloudy, rainy, or short winter days reduce solar input
-
High power usage:
- Frequent motion-triggered events (e.g. 100+ per day)
- Long recording durations
- Frequent live view or notifications
- Shaded or misaligned panels: Panels not facing direct sunlight won’t generate enough power
- Dirty surface: Dust, snow, or leaves can block sunlight
- Loose cable: Improper connection between the panel and camera may interrupt charging
Even if the green charging icon is on, the battery can still drain if power consumption exceeds input.
How to Improve Charging Efficiency
Follow these steps to ensure optimal solar charging:
-
Fully charge before setup
Use a certified 5V/1.5A wall charger before switching to solar. -
Choose the right location
Install the panel in a spot that receives at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily. -
Keep the panel clean
Regularly wipe the surface to remove dust or debris. -
Lower camera power usage
- Set motion sensitivity to Low or Medium
- Limit recordings to 10–15 seconds
- Set cooldown duration (Cloud & SD Card) to 1, 2, or 3 minutes
- Schedule sleep mode during inactive hours
- Avoid frequent live viewing
-
Check connections
Make sure the charging cable is secure and undamaged.
