Some users may prefer to place the camera indoors, facing outside, to reduce the risk of theft. This article explains whether your camera can be installed behind a window or glass, and the limitations you should be aware of.
Outdoor Battery Cameras
(Outdoor camera, bird feeder camera, 4G battery camera, doorbell camera)
Outdoor battery-powered cameras use a Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor to detect motion. Because infrared signals cannot pass through glass, motion detection will not work reliably if the camera is placed behind a window.
These cameras are designed for outdoor use and are weatherproof. To ensure accurate motion detection and optimal performance, we recommend installing outdoor battery cameras outside.
Plug-in Cameras
(Indoor camera, light bulb camera, wired camera)
Plug-in or wired indoor pan-tilt cameras use video analytics instead of PIR sensors. This allows them to detect motion through glass as long as the activity is within the camera’s field of view.
However, please note that reflections on the glass may occasionally trigger false motion events.
Night Vision and Glass Surfaces
When Night Vision is enabled, the infrared light may reflect on the glass surface, causing glare or reduced image clarity. For the best video quality, we recommend placing the camera in an unobstructed location.
Summary
- Outdoor battery cameras → Should be installed outdoors for accurate motion detection.
- Plug-in cameras → Can be placed behind glass, but reflections may affect motion detection.
- Night Vision → Glass surfaces may cause glare and reduce video quality.
