Why is my camera's motion detection range shorter than expected, and how can I improve it?
The detection range varies depending on the sensitivity setting and the installation angle. The distances below are based on installing the camera at a tilt of 10–15°, which is the optimal angle for PIR motion detection.
Detection Range by Sensitivity Level:
- High Sensitivity: Up to 8-10 meters (26-33 feet)
- Medium Sensitivity: Up to 6 meters (19 feet)
- Low Sensitivity: Up to 4 meters (13 feet)
To Maximize Detection Range:
- Increase Motion Detection Sensitivity: Set your camera to "High" sensitivity in the app (Camera Settings > Motion Detection > Detection Sensitivity). This provides the longest detection range.
- Optimal Camera Positioning:
- Install at approximately 7 feet height, angled downward 10-15°
- Position so movements cross the camera's field of view rather than moving directly toward/away from the camera
- Ensure a clear line of sight without obstructions
- Effective Detection Zone: The motion detector performs most effectively for movements within 5-20 feet (1.5-6 meters) from the camera, with maximum range achievable at high sensitivity settings.
Note: The PIR sensor detects changes in infrared heat signatures, so larger moving objects (people, vehicles) are detected more easily at longer ranges than smaller objects (small pets, birds).
